Why do we need Fire Doors?

Fire doors not only protect against raging flames that tear through buildings but also prevent the spread of hazardous smoke. Occupants of a building are more likely to experience fatal/serious injury through the inhalation of smoke than to deadly fires, which highlights the importance of fire doors to protect lives. 

In the event of multi-occupational buildings, it's required of property owners to provide fire rated doors to prevent the spread of fire throughout the building between rooms and floors. 

Fire rated doors allow between 30-60 minutes fire protection when properly upgraded, these are known more widely as FD30 and FD60 doors, which have alternative versions to protect against smoke. This gives occupants valuable time to escape a burning building safely, while also giving the fire and rescue services time to arrive and extinguish the ravaging fire. 

Methodist College Project

A number of historic doors required upgrading to FD30 standard in one of Belfasts iconic buildings, having been around in 1865. This historically rich building had been modernised with todays advanced passive fire protection products whilst still maintaining its classic aesthetic. A variety of classic solid oak doors with decorative beading and standard timber doors where all upgraded using Envirograf's door upgrading system to achieve 30 minutes fire protection. This addition of passive fire protection products to these historic doors provides an extra level of security in the event of a fire, these doors will provide an extra 30 minutes holding back flames from fire exits to allow occupants safe escape of the building.
